Canal Cheong-Jagerroos

Canal Cheong-Jagerroos has become known for her unique Chinese motif of blending primitive and
modern elements by incorporate with rice-paper and various different mixed mediums together.
Galleria Uusiatalo is pleased to present Canal painting exhibition, featuring about 40 new pieces of
her recent works.
Born in 1968 into an artistic family in Macao, Canal is an artist with roots in Chinese traditional
painting, her works are mostly inspired by ancient Chinese philosophies, poems, nature, seasons and
daily objects. Canal keep experimented with various painting materials and techniques in struggling
to find a solid interpretation of her artistic version. In addition the very special cultural experience of
having lived in 7 different countries in the last 15 years from Asia to Europe and Africa to
Scandinavia permeates her later works.
Most of Canal's paintings are resembling a beautiful lyric world where love, joy and freedom meet in
harmony. All elements in her paintings, be it the main object or a small detail, are painstakingly
worked on with equal devotion.
She paints on multiple layers of rice paper with acrylic, ink and Chinese pigment eventually
incorporating these together using mixed medium to derive a sense of depth on canvas.
As the artist own description that the process of painting is like magic to her. It captivates and
enthrals her, filling her with boundless energy. She strongly believes a painting should speak for itself;
it should communicate with the viewer in its own language.
Since 1986, Canal has held numerous solo and selected exhibitions in different countries, namely,
Macau, France, Italy, Austria, UK, Holland, Belgium, Estonia, Switzerland, Africa, Germany, Sweden
and USA.
