Totte Mannes: oil paintings

In addition to her well-known “Ribbons & Leaves” paintings, Totte Mannes now brings to Galleria Uusitalo a fascinating new series of paintings entitled “Dismantled sculptures”. Mannes got the idea for the series from the Spanish sculptor Miguel Berrocal (1933 - 2006). In his Italian workshop in Verona Berrocal produced thousands of “multiples”, bronze and silver sculptures and jewellery, which the buyer was able to take to pieces and then reassemble. Berrocal´s multiples were a world-wide success.

In a similar way Mannes’ paintings depict constructions that have been dismantled. They have been described as “deconstructivism” as oppose to “constructivism”. In order to give the required “three-dimensional” impression the artist has ensured the paintings are perfect down to the last detail. Additionally, in these series, Mannes makes reference to our contemporary world with her depiction of discs, cables and comets, her painterly surfaces also evoking differently coloured shining metal - a comment on our materialism.
