Hannu Palosuo: Denying One’s Destiny Hannu Palosuo only paints pictures of things which he finds personally significant: he paints photographs, places and objects that have belonged to friends, to family or to him. His finished paintings embody and preserve these feelings. Yet Palosuo’s paintings speak to people the world over; viewers are able to identify with the work despite varying points of departure. Through thematic repetition, Palosuo aims for truth and simplicity. Occasionally giving the canvas equal importance by allowing it to appear through the painting, the artist builds several overlapping worlds including a stage: a stage which we, as viewers, can embrace and complete in our own way. Humanity is international. Sometimes to see close up you have to be far away. Pia Maria Montonen In Hannu Palosuo’s work the central theme has always been the investigation of memory and its visualisation whilst, at the same time, allowing space for the viewer’s own emotional response. In the paintings for this exhibition "Denying One's Destiny", shown for the first time at Galleria Uusitalo in Helsinki, Palosuo has moved away from painting chairs, his characteristic theme over the last several years, and concentrated rather on depicting our national landscape, the Finnish forest, together with memories from his own past. Through a direct response to these images the viewer is able to experience his own individual emotions. Furthermore, in these current works Palosuo has avoided narration; the simple act of looking conveys the purest and most direct emotion. Hannu Palosuo graduated from the Accademia delle Belle Arti di Roma in 1997. He has had many one man exhibitions and has taken part in group exhibitions all over the world. This year he has had private exhibitions in Monaco, Spain and Tampere and has taken part in several group exhibitions including the Museo Nazionale di Castel Sant'Angelo in Rome and the Casa Rosada in Buenos Aires. Following the exhibition at Galleria Uusitalo, Palosuo will exhibit in Rome in October and in Ferrara in November.
