Marjukka Uusitalo established Gallery Uusitalo at its present location in central Helsinki in 1997. The gallery is one of Finland’s leading private contemporary art spaces, acclaimed for both the quality of work it presents and the mix of artists it promotes. An initial commitment to exhibit painted works has widened over the decade to include photography, graphic art, sculpture, installations and new media. The gallery’s programme combines work by artists of established reputation with more challenging work by younger artists, including several Finnish Young Artists of the Year, for whom the gallery has usually provided the first solo exhibition opportunity. Gallery Uusitalo exhibits and promotes the work of domestic and overseas artists, Finns and non-Finns. Over the past 10 years Gallery Uusitalo has represented artists at art fairs and exhibitions in the Nordic region, Spain, Korea, Mexico and the USA.. The gallery’s artists have held exhibitions in Europe, the Far East, Russia, the USA and Central America.
The gallery site comprises two spaces; a first floor exhibition area of 170 m2 which accommodates the gallery’s programme of solo shows and, Studio U, a basement exhibition and sale space of 150 m2, where Gallery Uusitalo artists are able to exhibit and sell incidental and post-exhbition work.
